Two men losing their lives in a violent incident on a synagogue in Manchester have been named by police as 53-year-old Adrian Daulby, and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz.

Three more people remain in hospital with serious injuries after Jihad Al-Shamie drove a vehicle into people before using a bladed weapon on the morning of the incident.

The violent incident, which authorities have declared was a act of terrorism, occurred on the Day of Atonement, the most sacred occasion in the Jewish faith.

The assailant, who was fatally shot at the scene, was a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian background who was not on record to counter terrorism police, according to official statements.

"Our hearts are broken," the nation's top rabbinical authority declared.

The perpetrator was not identified to terrorism investigators, she told news organizations, and it was "too early" to say if there was a organized group behind the attack.

Police Inquiry

The criminal probe was "continuing at pace" and there was an enhanced security deployment at synagogues across the UK.

"Authorities allocate security funding," the representative stated, adding: "It will be necessary to examine what more we can do to address increasing anti-Jewish sentiment."

Greater Manchester police said they were assisting the relatives of the two men killed.

"Sincere condolences are with the families of the victims at this incredibly difficult period," a senior police officer declared.

He indicated that trained family liaison officers were in communication with families and would continue to support them through the investigative procedures.

"Whilst there are processes which must be followed, we promise to be considerate of cultural preferences and concerns and to guaranteeing that these men and their loved ones' wishes are respected," he continued, mentioning that the deceased individuals were from the Manchester community.
